Facebook, Myspace, Twitter. which do you prefer? Or do you prefer any of them? Everyday seems like I hear about a new celebrity saying something or doing something on Twitter or Facebook to get themselves in trouble, then all of a suddden their account is closed. And everyday people are using these tools like they are their lifeline. Now I do enjoy Facebook, Myspace has gotten a little too childish, and I dont think I will ever follow anybody on a Twitter so I dont have an account. But what is it about these sites that get people in so much trouble. Losing jobs for talking bad about the company, jurors facebooking about trials, cheating and posting the pictures of the mistress/mister .. Maybe the freedom to say what you want behind a computer? but it seems to always come out to the public. (dummies) .. Well that will be the topic for today, which do you prefer and why. Or in general, what do you think about these sights.?

I use Facebook. I like to keep in touch with my friends/family. I'm in Dallas and most of my family are in St. Louis so it allows me to communicate with them more. I'm not much of a phone person so I'd rather keep in touch this way or by texting.

I have a Facebook account, but I don't really use it. :) I don't really like Twitter. Actually, to be honest, Twitter SUCKS. lol
- 2 votes
On facebook it's really cool the way you can find and hook up with you best friend from the second grade. lol But the downside, my friend has a Facebook account and an ex co-worker from her husband's work kept trying to get her to have her husband call her. She was not too happy about that. I don't blame her though, the woman used to flirt with her husband all the time.

I agree, I love FB, but....it can get a little intrusive too. Most of my coworkers are on my friends list so I have to be a little careful when whining about work. I rarely post anything anyway though...I play a few games, but that's about it. I have to admit that it was a nice way to get in touch with old classmates.
Twitter? I follow one thing...local radio station, and only because they say what's cioming up on the show so I know to listen or not...other than that, it sucks.

I agree. I have a few on there that I accepted when I first got on there because I didn't want to hurt their feelings. And I can't bump them for the same reason. I should make a seperate account for the one's I REALLY want on there. lol
I have no problem declining now. But I did when I first started. :)

my space "is" generally for kids, no "twitter" for me please and Facebook I use to keep in touch with out of town family, my friends, just chitty chatty jibber jab amoungst friends and fam. That's about it. Now, for some in your face, take it like you give it, serious and, not so serious discussions.....NEWSVINE BABY!!! No ifs ands or buts(butts?)!!!
- 4 votes
I would say there are plenty of (butts) here. ; )
You also reminded me of something key on facebook - i NEVER discuss politics on there. NEVER. I don't link anything and my politics stay here. It bugs me when it gets too political on FB. ugh.

I agree m3.

Me too mther. I made the mistake of posting something political on facebook and got a bunch of crap. My uncle is always posting obnoxious far right rants on FB and it drives me nuts. I dont say anything though.
- 2 votes
I don't say anything either, but I'd like to! lol! Then I rush over here and do it! : )

I have a facebook account and used to play the games. Now its just there. I have never Twittered in my life. But I do have a blog at multiply.com :)
- 1 vote
I put some of the gamers on my friends list on ignore because I don't really care what vegetable they just planted in farmville or what their high score is on farkle. I've never gotten into Twitter either. Overhyped, IMO.
- 5 votes
I have most of the apps blocked. I'm good with places like this one. People have their opinions and that is pretty much it.
- 2 votes
Yep, I agree Dawn. I'm not even on FB as much since I found NV.
- 2 votes
I do like to blog about 'stuff' and multiply is the best place for that.

I didn't understand mafia wars. LOL I did the farming stuff, but now, not much of anything.
I tried mafia wars, but....just bored me. I don't like games where you MUST play it every day...like farmville??? Sorry...I cannot play daily. I like tiki farm....you can take a month off that game and it's fine. Verdonia is cool, if you're patient; some of the upgrades take DAYS..
I don't do any of that at all. I have too many aspects of my life that I want kept private, until I feel comfortable with some one.
Sorry, I guess I'm not that interesting :-0
- 2 votes
believer....That doesn't mean you're not interesting. I'm the same way. :) Oh wait....Maybe we're both not very interesting!! lol Seriously though, I don't put my life out there either. :)
P.S. You are interesting and funny too. :)

Thanks, Mary J.
now I'm a little embarassed.
Oh hell. No I'm not :-)

I was on Myspace and FB. But am no longer. I was on it mostly to try and stay connected w my daughter, but severed ties w her today... on her 21st bday.

ADad... I'm sorry. :( ((((ADad)))) Things will get better. She'll come around.
- 4 votes
Thanx, Mary J and Dawn. I'm not holding my breath. She insulted me one too many times. She's incapable of seeing things from anyone else's perspective except her own. I had to back away for my own sanity... Which aint sayin' much.
- 3 votes
Hopefully she will grow out of this stage. 21 is still in the young and stupid range ya know. Heck I'm, well lets just say I'm well over 21 and still fall into the young and stupid range at times. :)
- 2 votes
ADad.... It will all work out!! She'll come around. And your relationship will be even better because you're setting boundries that she'll know she shouldn't cross. :) ((((ADad))))

((((((((dad))))))))))) I'm so sorry to hear that. : ( Youth. ugh.
- 2 votes
ADad, she's young and in school. Let her cool off and she'll be back. Mine recently sent me an e-mail asking how I was. So when they are ready they'll get in touch. Work on YOU and keep busy. I did the same to my parents and my kids have rewarded me with the same behavior! LOL!!!
Take care friend!

I love facebook. I've lived so many places that it helps me keep up with everyone!
- 4 votes
I love facebook but had to learn how to keep it in it's appropriate place. It caused a lot of problems with me. I used to be in radio sales so my social connection with people is pretty diverse in my community. I started out just accepting any and all friend requests. Next thing I knew, I was getting solicitations or some pretty strong suggestive flirting. My husband was VERY uncomfortable with it. My solution was to weed out all the waste. The question I asked myself was, "If I were to send Christmas cards, would this person be on my list?" That helped me narrow from about 400 to 80. Now it's healthy and strictly for close connections and family.

Here on NV I'll accept an FR from just about anyone unless they're harassing me or something. On FB I won't accept one if I don't know the person.
I'd rather not have my kid's info spread all over the net. I tell him the dangers of it. He'll be 14 on Monday and thinks he's 10' tall and bullet proof.

Awww....the beauty of youth! My grandfather said that's the reason the army wants them young.
I want to share pics of my kids with those who care and I know have honest intentions. The internet is dangerous and I have all my privacy settings up.
I only have 3 friends on NV and you were my first Belove! haha I tell myself my lack of friends is only because I'm new to this. (it can't have anything to do with my personality!) lol

becky--
Some people wait to learn a little bit about a new person before they extend invites. Keep commenting, write an article....they will come.
Also, it helps to put a little something in your bio. Doesn't have to be personal, but something that will give folks a hint.
- 3 votes
Don't be afraid to send other people FRs too. If you like what they have to say then go for it:)
- 2 votes
You're all so sweet. I had my pic on here but my husband threw a fit. I'm not saying I'm all that but there are SOME men who find me attractive and he was worried I'd run into the same problem on here. I conceded and agreed. He argued, "At least you'll know your conversations with people are because they're genuinly interested in your thoughts and not pretending due to other ideas."
Thanks for the encouragement everyone! :) Come to think of it.....I didn't send the FR but I did reach out to belove. I'm sure it will develop.

It doesn't have to be a picture of you. Anything other than the Green Man. That way people have some sort of an identity for you

I also got into a pretty heated discussion with a girl. It became embarrassing because it felt like we were on a reality show. To top it off.....the VERY day that happened, I took my lunch break and we wound up at the same restaurant! It was uggggggggly. We had never met before and got into the discussion through mutual friends. Thanks to FB, our pictures were up so we quickly recognized each other.
Now I've found newsvine so I can express my opinions and not risk knowingly bumping into anyone on here. It's a beautiful thing :)
- 2 votes
Becky, that's why I don't "do" any of those. Maybe a generation thing? Anyone can see and read everything. I'm too private. And these days employers, etc will mess with employees about anything.
My opinions are my business and what I do on my time off is especially my business!!
You haven't been on the Vine long. When some one sends me a FR or I want to send one out, I go to their column and read their "bio". If there isn't one, then I read the Headlines of what they read or stuff they write. You get an idea. I read and comment on all kinds of sites. LOL!! Can't imagine what anyone thinks but I've made a lot of friends here. Blue IS my favorite color! LOL!!! Good luck. And welcome to the Vine!

I use FB to communicate with my son in Iraq. When he is back in the states. i rarely go on it. What I don't like is all the invites and being informed of all the games. Not interested

I'd have no friends except for the ones in my head!

Pint, have you already forgotten when I mentioned that my husband thought he lived with the ONLY crazy lady on earth? When we divorced, he found out I was NOT alone! hahahhahahaha
Get used to it Buddy! lmao
Not the fire and ice again, Pint......dkaz can smell that an ocean away....you sure you want her to show up and degenerate your article into the gutter? LOL

Scary thought, isn't it?

I use Facebook. My family (mom/dad, brothers, sister) are all spread out over the US so its the best way for all of us to communicate with each other. I also like the farmtown game. I find it relaxing and am making millions on it. lol Too bad its not for real huh?
- 3 votes
Pint, why can't y'all just send e-mails? Maybe I'm too old and been on a computer 1 1/2 years. Too old? LOL!!! Me ,that is!
- 3 votes
Pint, guess I have fewer family and friends. And get junk to the junk page.
Hope everyone is safe from storms and fires. Just getting the news from my Mother.

I just started participating in Facebook but I keep everything to a limit. I don't post photos of family, I don't discuss anything of a detailed nature and I never offer any negative opinion. My posts are quick and positive. I never talk about work or personal matters. The main reason that I have posted on Facebook is to keep track of a few old friends. Nothing more.
- 1 vote
I don't check Facebook often enough but it is a good way to keep up with what friends in other places are doing. And since most of my friends are techies, it's starting to be the place to go to find out what events I'm invited to, instead of Evite or something.
The ones who use it like Twitter irritate me, though - posting what they're doing all day long. I'm not on Twitter because nobody (myself included) is interesting enough for people to need to know that. Hey, I just drank water! Hey, gotta pee now! Hey, just got back to my desk! I mean - who cares??

My FB account was started by a friend as an April Fool's joke, where it laid dormant for 2 years after he gave me control. I was not an active user until I started posting photos of all the trips I've gone on and it blossomed from there. I still consider it a joke ("FakeBook"), but not enough to post/do stupid and careless things on it because you never know who might be watching. I use it to stay in touch with people whom I have no other convenient way of contacting (unknown phone#, email, address etc). I was on Twitter until my account was hijacked, but by that time I was jaded from spam and lack of interest that I didn't care.
As an early adopter of both, I can say that FB and Twitter were much, much better before everyone and their mother joined. I especially dislike how corporations can have FB profiles.
O.K. I am a dinosaur...I have no clue what Twitter is or how it works and I could care even less LOL
I have FB and myspace but don't know why since my daughter set them up so I could 'connect' with people I don't even want to connect with. If I want to talk to friends or family I can call or email. Truthfully tho I dislike most of my family and have very few friends so I have never even looked at either account.
I spend alot of time on NV to read what others are thinking or saying about topics that pique my curiousity and I sometimes post my own replies if I feel I can add to the discussion. I have accepted a few FR's from other viners but haven't sent out any (mostly because I don't know how)

I don't have any of these accounts. I don't think I would take the time to maintain them. I do think they're a great way to stay in touch if you choose to. Everyone in my family has an account and I'm always harrassed because I don't. My biggest problem with these sights is my lack of privacy on someone elses account. My daughter was on facebook and asked "who is this lady that has all these pictures of you on her facebook?" It was a woman who had attended an event of a mutual friend. WTF? If I want my picture on the internet I'll post it.
Exactly, Shel. Imagine how embarrassed I was when my son posted info about an accident he had involving certain private parts!!! Or when one of my kids posts how their sex life is going....I don't wanna know and I'm sure 99.9% of the rest of the world doesn't either.
I could careless about these social websites: Too many circus acts and popularity contests going on that are unnecessary.
However, combining Google Earth with Facebook (a.k.a. Earthbook) or with Myspace (a.k.a. MyEarth) would make an interesting platform; especially if the program/website allowed you to hang out with long lost friends, who actually live in various locations throughout the country, in a fourth-dimensional photorealistic virtual world in places such as Fifth Avenue or Canal Street in New York City, or any of the thousands of other cities throughout the world.
I can envision friends setting up a virtual-itinerary, on Earthbook, for all of them to meet each other at a hotdog stand or an Indonesian restaurant on Hawaii island on July 26, 2013 to talk about their careers, relationships, and families.
Moreover, with future updated versions of MyEarth or Earthbook, members would be able to purchase a hotdog inside the computer-generated world and have the hotdog be actually produced by their newly installed 3-D or 4-D printer (includes time and an expiration date for the wholesome experience), which adds even more realism to the long-distance adventure.
